![]() That isn’t a knock, rather it’s the beginning of a bigger picture.Īs you progress in the game, hitting the smaller quest breadcrumbs that lead to a big fight, you start to unlock more and more of the world. For the first few hours, you’re going to run around a map no bigger than something you would find in a Call of Duty multiplayer experience. It’s a weird combination that is balanced out by the story. The gameplay for Deathloop is quite deep in its backend, while light on the front end. Speaking of which, let’s talk about that gameplay. Regardless, it’s a fulfilling story that drives the gameplay, which can be good or bad depending on how you take it. While it’s not exactly a branching narrative, its story flowchart will certainly make it feel less linear…but ultimately it just has a lot of linear parts with some choice. It also allows you to jump around major and minor quests, which makes this a buffet of a story to play. It is thick with pieces and parts that branch out into fun sections. The story really does dig its teeth into you and motivates you to keep going and going and going and going. Well, if your buddy was trying to kill you. It is a fascinating story that reminds me a bit of Christopher Nolan’s Memento while containing the humor of a good buddy comedy. There is a lot of backstory to their relationship and Julianna’s justified bitterness towards Colt’s need to destroy the loop so that he can leave it. Also, Colt wants to break the loop, and the reason for that is slowly revealed. You wake up as Colt, you piece together why you can loop back to life once you die, and you must figure out the breadcrumbs that equal the connection to Julianna, and why she is hellbent on making Colt’s life miserable. The former is who you start out with wat the beginning of the game and the main character that goes through the campaign. The game revolves around Colt and Julianna. While I highly recommend visiting Ben’s write-up prior to mine, the story hasn’t changed a single bit since it was first released. I have purposely gone into this game without playing it on the PS5, and I must admit that Ben hit the nail on the head about it.ĭid I love it as he loved it? Not at all, but I can see its perfection. While I cannot fathom ever having a write-up like Ben Sheene’s original Deathloop review, I do have some notes to add for this newly released XBX game that was an exclusive on the PlayStation 5. We are revisiting Deathloop, but this time on the Xbox Series X.

It’s not too flashy, but it’s an important part of every Faceless Menace upgrade. LandsĪs a three color deck, you should pay attention to your lands. Putrefy is also good and it’s pretty cheap too. Assassin’s Trophy and Casualties of War are both very versatile and you’ll probably always have a good target for them. It will make each one of your blue decks better. It’s quite pricey, but it really is a true Commander staple. They would both fit nicely in the deck.īecause you have blue in your deck, you will want Cyclonic Rift. The deck is missing two great ramp spells in Rampant Growth and Kodama’s Reach. ![]() Manifest is another face-down mechanic which plays nicely with the deck theme. It’s situational but can be quite powerful if you set it up correctly against a multiple opponents. However there is a noteworthy exception however in Brine Elemental. ![]() Most of the Morph creatures are already in the deck. You can play a morph or two in your turn and then unmorph them during your opponents’ turn. Wilderness Reclamation is another good one. Ugin is particularly nice since it has other uses too. You can do so with Dream Chisel or Ugin, the Ineffable. Sadly, you won’t always have Kadena in play or you’ll want to play more than one morph creature. Kadena helps with your first morph which is great. Morph or no – three mana for a 2/2 creature is still a subpar rate. You can however return it to your hand with cards like Thousand Winds so you can cast it normally. If it’s not a creature, it’s just stays on the battlefield as a 2/2. If it’s a creature card, you may turn it face-up at instant speed for its mana cost. You put the top card of your library face down as a 2/2 creature. A card can instruct you to manifest another card – usually from the top of your library but it can be from other zones. Manifest is another way of playing cards face-down. As such this keyword only appears on creatures.Įxamples: Ainok Survivalist, Den Protector How Does Manifest Work? When you turn the creature with Megamorph face up, you put an +1/+1 counter on it. Mostly the same as Morph – with one small upside. It’s also great because it let’s you do something in the early game and still have powerful options in the late game. This way your opponents won’t know what’s waiting for them face-down. Especially if you have lots of them in your deck. Morph is usually a fun mechanic to play with. You can even set up situations to reuse your creatures if needed. Then you wait for the perfect opportunity and return a bunch of opponents’ creatures to their hands. You might have more mana though, or only three – in both cases you can play Thousand Winds face down for 3. No problem, you can just ignore the whole morph text, pay 4UU and cast Thousand Winds as a 5/6 flyer. Let’s say you have six mana and just need a big flyer. Take a look at Thousand Winds for example. This process doesn’t use the stack – this means players can’t Shock your face-down creature in response to you paying the morph cost.Ī lot of morph card will also come with an additional benefit for turning them face up. This means they can be cast face down for 3 mana as a 2/2 colorless creatures without creature types.Īt any time player can cast an instant spell, they can pay its morph cost to turn the creature face up. If you’re a more enfranchised player, feel free to skip the next paragraph. Before we do that, we’ll check how face-down creatures and Morph works. We’ll take a look at both of those two groups. Synergy is important – but good cards will really improve your win rate. On the other hand you shouldn’t forget about the simply good cards. On top of that, there are specific requirements for hard mode combined with reaching certain mastery values. Unfortunately for achievement hunters, playing the game with each of these modes is required (therefore at least 3 playthroughs, if not even more). For the first 2, there’s an additional scoring system (“mastery”) based on how many times you fail a level or how efficiently you solve it. ![]() Cave Quest is a fairly easy and moderately long game (5-6h to complete), while in Cave Quest 2 there are not only 3 main difficulty modes for the adventure component (affecting how you see the available actions on the map or how fast the hints recharge), but you can also pick between having limited time to solve a level, limited moves, or neither of them. In terms of difficulty, there are major differences between the two games. Every time you level up, you will be prompted to choose an upgrade to an already unlocked powerup / passive perk, or unlock a new skill. In Cave Quest 2 though, the player also has a leveling system and completing a match-3 game will award a certain amount of experience points, depending on your performance and difficulty setting. In the first game, the rewards were coins that you could then spend in the shop to unlock or upgrade power ups, but also to buy items necessary for story progression. Each boss has a specific set of attacks / spells that they cast on you, therefore each of these levels is individualized and plays differently.ĭue to that, there’s a strong RPG feel, and especially in Cave Quest 2 where the reward mechanic that you gain from completing a match-3 level received a redesign. Both you and your enemy can use power-ups to trigger combo matches, thus increasing the damage / healing done during your turn. Nevertheless, they’re super fun to solve and unique.īoth games use a turn-based battle system – whenever you encounter a major enemy, you’ll be prompted with a special match-3 level in which the player and the opponent take turns in matching tiles from the grid some matches constitute an attack, others will heal, and a third type will build up towards a shield that reflects the enemy’s attacks. Additionally, in Cave Quest 2 these levels have become much more complex and maze-like – inside one level there are multiple crossroads, and you can now choose the direction in which you go next there are more obstacles and it takes significantly longer to reach the end objective. The path switches direction from time to time, and so do your matches. In these, you have to guide the main character along one narrow path, making matches in front of them to clear the road. However, there’s much more to it than that.Īpart from the classic match-3 levels in which you need to break tiles / chains by creating matches on top or around them or moving a certain item to the bottom of the level, there are some special levels encountered when you visit a new location for the first time, called “pathing” levels. You visit several locations and pick up various objects that you store in your inventory for later usage and you solve puzzles using these items, which in turn triggers match-3 levels. Both look a lot like a HOG and play like one, except for the fact that the hidden object scenes and any kind of object interactions / minigames have all been replaced by match-3 levels. In fact, I was so hooked up after the first few levels that I decided to play through the entire first game before continuing with this one.Ĭave Quest and Cave Quest 2 are pretty much identical in concept (although some of the mechanics were redesigned and improved in the second installment of the series) and can be played individually – there is no story connection between them and each one is linear (you can’t replay an already completed level). Cave Quest 2 is an excellent puzzle adventure match-3 game and overall a very well made game, albeit a tad difficult but one that I greatly enjoyed. As a non-Soulsborne fan I actually didn't mind it that much. As a Soulsborne fan, you'll probably like that a lot. There are aspects that will be familiar, but it's significantly more Soulsborne inspired, with a lot of the structure being copy/paste Soulseborne Lite. The third is kind of a whole different game. I personally don't think there's more Zelda-ness to the first than the second when in dungeons. I think some just love the fairly unusual for the genre apocalyptic/industrial setting of the first more than the more "generic" fantasy focused setting of the second. There's always quirks to the series, it's not the most polished experience around, but I think the second one balanced more the dungeon/puzzle aspects with the exploration aspects and didn't fall into as many "old brown design" pitfalls as the first. I absolutely loved the second one, though. The first also had to many "survive the endless spawning waves of monsters" moments and got stale to me. That, and the level design of the era often leaves a lot to be desired. Not only is it drab looking, but I think it makes some puzzles and navigation harder than they're intended to be because everything blends together. Part of it I think is the all-brown mid-PS360 era color pallete.
